Ginger Powell – Personal Statement

Born and raised in Ontario, I moved to Kamloops in 2015. With a passion for both storytelling and sustainability, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Communication and Digital Journalism with a major in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing at Thompson Rivers University. Maintaining a 4.1 GPA, I am committed to mastering strategic communication, audience engagement, and digital storytelling. My goal is to help organizations craft meaningful narratives, build strong relationships, and communicate effectively in an ever-evolving media landscape.

Beyond communications, I have a lifelong passion for plants and horticulture. My experience as a Garden Centre Nursery Manager has given me expertise in plant selection, garden design, and customer education. This unique combination of skills allows me to approach communications with an environmental and design-focused perspective, merging creativity with sustainability. I believe that effective storytelling is not just about words—it’s about creating an experience that resonates with people, whether that’s through branding, marketing, or public engagement.

Since moving to Kamloops, I have embraced the community-driven spirit of the region, working to build meaningful connections through both my professional and volunteer work. I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to integrate my skills in public relations, digital marketing, and content creation with my passion for sustainability and design. I thrive at the intersection of strategy and creativity, using research-driven approaches to develop messaging that informs and inspires.

This portfolio showcases my work in writing, public relations, and marketing—demonstrating my ability to craft narratives that align with organizational goals and audience needs. My Wildcard piece, a presentation for the Thompson Shuswap Master Gardeners course, fulfills the Institutional Learning Outcome of Connection. I look forward to applying my skills in a co-op position and collaborating with teams that value innovation, engagement, and impactful communication.
